If you’re reading this, you are in high school. You most likely feel your childhood slipping away in a wind of stress and responsibility. It’s a common experience. It happens to everyone, whether it’s while going through old clothes, looking through a photo album, or babysitting. Your childhood may seem fragile, but you don’t always lose your childhood as you get older. Rather, you grow and mature in addition to that version of yourself. Hold on to the memories and mindset you’ve had for so long, and they’ll hold on to you. Here’s my advice:
- Go on the swingset with some friends - this one is my favorite. One of the most frequent and universal childhood memories is simply going to a playground and swinging so high. It’s also really easy. Off the top of my head, I can name about 3 playgrounds less than 5 minutes away from my house. Grab your friends and embrace old memories.
- Finding old chalk - chalk is a simple, artsy joy. Find some in your backyard, garage, or at walmart or the dollar tree. Chalk can be really fun, and make life seem simple and joyful. Recently, my neighbors (two little girls) asked me to play with them and knew not to pass up this opportunity. Drawing with chalk seems like nothing special, yet feeling like a child again suddenly seemed to slow down life.
- Memory boxes - If you made one as a kid, go through it and have fun. If not, make one. For me, a memory box makes me think, and be grateful for everything I have or have had, as well as having a good time looking at old pictures and friendship bracelets.
- Find a mini-you. I love volunteering with little kids, and seeing my younger self in them. For one, kids love having the chance to feel “grown-up”. But it can be fun for you too! Think of what it was like when you were their age, and then remember how much you’ve grown and be grateful for everything you’ve learned.
To everyone reading, have a beautiful, nostalgic day.
